Managed a newsroom that reached 230 employees at its peak. 1996-2000 BUSINESS EDITOR, THE NEWS & OBSERVER Led the coverage of the Research Triangle’s business community and economy. Launched several new products, including a Sunday Work & Money section and a Technology section. Overall responsibility for newspaper and commercial printing budgets, strategic planning and hiring. 1988-1989 ASSISTANT MANAGING EDITOR, VIRGINIAN-PILOT, NORFOLK, VA Responsible for planning and editing news coverage in the cities of Portsmouth and Suffolk and the county of Isle of Wight in Southeastern Virginia. 1986-1988 PRE-PRESS MANAGER, VIRGINIAN-PILOT Responsible for managing pre-press operations in the Production Department of the newspaper. This included the composition and camera departments, as well as the technicians and IT personnel who supported the pre-press systems. This job was part of the company’s cross-training to develop prospective senior managers. 1985-1988 ASSISTANT METRO EDITOR, VIRGINIAN-PILOT Responsible for oversight of state government and politics coverage as well as state coverage as part of the Metro Desk editing staff. This included planning all state election coverage as well as oversight of the newspaper’s state capital bureau in Richmond. 1983-1985 ASSISTANT CITY EDITOR, VIRGINIAN-PILOT Responsible for planning and editing coverage on the Norfolk city desk. Responsible for planning and editing the Norfolk city tabloid, the Norfolk Compass. 1981-1983 ASSOCIATE EDITOR, VIRGINIAN-PILOT Responsible for writing daily editorials for the newspaper’s editorial page. 1980-1981 REPORTER, VIRGINIA BEACH BEACON, VIRGINIA BEACH.
