There were 32,537 job postings for information technology jobs in North Carolina in November, according to NC TECH, an industry trade association. That is around 6,800 jobs less than the number of openings posted in October, a 17.4% drop in one month. Compared to November 2021, it is a 4.1% decline.
According to NC TECH, there were around 275,300 tech workers in North Carolina as of 2020 making $32 billion.
Tech companies have announced some high profile layoffs. Amazon is reported to be doing 20,000 layoffs. Meta, 11,000. HP, 6,000. Cisco 4,100.
But tech jobs are in every company, so what is happening in the big, high-profile tech giants may not be happening in bank or insurance company IT departments. There are still a lot of tech jobs being advertised, even if the softening economy is causing some retrenchment.
In the Charlotte MSA, employers were posting 12,206 IT jobs in November, down 13% from a year ago. In the Raleigh MSA, 9,386, off 11%. In Durham/Chapel Hill, 3,072, down 6%.
Fayetteville employers are posting 1,388 jobs, up 64%. But Greensboro/High Point was off 32%, at 1,163.
The top hirers of tech talent are: General Dynamics Information Technology, Deloitte, Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, Wells Fargo, Unitedhealth Group, MetLife, HCL Technologies, Truist and KPMG. So not companies trying to invent cool tech gizmos. Rather, they are companies that need tech talent to continue being banks, insurance companies, defense contractors and accountants.
